New York, NY: Harper & Row, 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Tom Clark within an original drawing. "In the middle of/ a billion nature vibra-/ tions there is sudden-/ ly a typewriter and/ someone is typing the/ words "In the middle of/ a billion nature vibra-/ tions there is sudden-/ ..." " ("In the middle of," pg. 37) The second hardcover collection of poems by Tom Clark (1941-2018), the prodigious poet, editor & biographer who started off with a bang during the late 1960s & carried on prolifically even as his star faded, leaving us a vast & brilliant legacy that epitomizes our category of "The Prolific & Underappreciated." With dust jacket designed & illustrated by Joe Brainard (1942-1994), the legendary sui generis artist & writer whose life & work were cut short by AIDS. On title page, within area of title & author, is an original drawing of bordered landscape, sky & clouds. The double-border is in nearly the same color & vein as Brainard's dust jacket illustrations, so this artwork may have been executed by him or by Clark, who was also an artist as well as a writer- or both of them in collaboration? Inside the drawing, below his printed name, Clark has hand-written his signature. A handsome production; & a very rare collectible in the early Clark canon with this hand-drawing & signature. In exceptionally very fine condition: Book with only very slight wear & fading at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; light spotting at side edge of text block. Interior with only several small tears- closeable folds at blank side edge of one page leaf (pgs. 45-46) which to our seasoned eyes appears likely a slight production flaw; otherwise substantially mint. Unclipped dust jacket in very fine condition with only very light rubbing & light, sparse spotting to front, esp. back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same. Very Fine / Very fine. [Item #3619]
