FreeThought Vol. II Issue II (Fall 2000) with: FreeThought Flyer No. 2
Encinitas, CA: Gary L. Aposhian & FreeThought Publications, 2000. Limited First Printing. Loose Folded Sheets; Folded Sheet in envelope. Jim McCrary's limited edition copy with limited flyer signed by poet Bradley Mason Hamlin & artist Christine Fullwood. This number of the independent literary journal chiefly edited & published by Gary Aposhian (1962-2007) is mostly dedicated to William S. Burroughs, Founding Father of the Beat Generation & among the most influential literary & (counter) cultural figures of all time. This "Burroughs retrospective..." (from front cover subtitle) features front cover portrait of WSB by underground comix legend Robert Crumb; an interview with James Grauerholz, WSB's top associate & guardian of his legacy; "The Junky Essay" about WSB's first published work by Bradley Mason Hamlin; an essay by Jim McCrary, an associate of WSB during his later years, on Allen Ginsberg's visit with WSB which he attended; an essay by this writer about my own one-&-only visit with WSB during 1995 with photo of WSB & myself; an interview with Legendary Literary Outlaw Charles Plymell about his close friendship & collaborations with WSB; an interview with New York School-Beat-&-Beyond iconic poet Anne Waldman also about her thoughts on & experiences with WSB; & more including a transcription of WSB's oral routine "Words of Advice for Young People" (which I had the pleasure of listening to in WSB's voice by live phone hookup at the NYU Beat Generation conference during 1994). This copy is from McCrary's collection, & is part of a hand-numbered limited edition of 150 on special thick paper stock. This is copy No. 137/150. Also included from McCrary is FreeThought Flyer No. 2, a single sheet folded into three panels double-door style & printed on both sides, with the WSB-related poem "Love Virus" by Hamlin with illustration of WSB by Christine Fullwood. Both poet & artist have hand-written their signatures at the title-illustration central panel. Both the flyer & the envelope in which it is stored are hand-numbered from an edition of 150- this is copy No. 130/150. This poem & illustration are also featured in the issue proper. A favorite WSB collectible of mine for obvious reasons; & an increasingly rare WSB-related gem in its own right, with association & provenance of distinguished contributors, if we may say so ourselves. In very fine condition, loose sheets folded once lengthwise with only very slight wear at edges & corners; one small spot at blank lower right side margin of front cover. Flyer in very fine condition with a few faint creases on surfaces; very slight wear & a few tiny bumps to edges & corners. Envelope in fine condition with very light rubbing to white surfaces; somewhat profuse but mild creasing at same along with edges & corners. Very Fine. [Item #3621]
