Solitudes Crowded with Loneliness

New York, NY: New Directions, 1965. Fourth Printing. Softcover. From the Collection of Thomas Rain Crowe, poet, publisher, impresario, personal friend of Bob Kaufman and interview subject behind Third Mind Books' debut publication, "Starting from San Francisco: The Second San Francisco Renaissance and the Baby Beat Generation." Offered here is the legendary "Solitudes Crowded with Loneliness," the 1965 collection of Kaufman's "selected" works (those who are familiar with Kaufman may know the tales of friends dictating his poems to paper for him as he recited them, or saving extant manuscripts from obscurity-oblivion). Added to these are two works published by City Lights before 1965, Kaufman's iconic "Abomunist Manifesto" and "Second April," the latter of which later playing a part in Kaufman's "reemergence" from his years of self-imposed silence after the Kennedy assassination. While this particular copy (as a fourth printing) is not what makes it a unique specimen, it is from the Collection of Thomas Rain Crowe--the central force behind Kaufman's reemergence into poetry as a celebrated mentor-figure in the Second San Francisco Renaissance, engineered by Thomas and his "Baby Beat" associates. Thomas knew Bob virtually as well as anyone could during those days, and it is for this reason that this copy offers distinguished provenance. Book in near fine condition with modest rubbing to front, back covers; shelf-wear at all fine-edges; mild spotting at bottom left-hand corner of back cover. Near Fine. [Item #3625]
