Los Angeles, CA: Illuminati, 1989. First Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by Robert Peters to Charles & Pamela Beach Plymell. "The long-awaited gathering in book form of Robert Peters' more experimental work, including the entire text of Byron Exhumed, a precursor of his later monologue and persona pieces. Breughel's Pig overflows with Peters' overriding concern: to make our victimizations- our life in the raw- more endurable, and to find a way of transmuting one's rage at an outrageous universe into an unsentimental murmur of song." (from back cover) A collection of many mostly short, intensely evocative & visceral poems by Robert Peters (1924-2014), the great American poet, performer, playwright, critic & scholar. Divided into three sections, the preamble for the first of which, also on front & back covers, is exemplary of the flavor & impact of this collection: "The world runs/ with a knife struck through its hide,/ a wedge sliced from its back." High, narrow-format softcover original first edition. On the title page, Peters has hand-written & signed: "For Charlie & Pam/ this one has been a/ long time in the oven-/ Love/ (signed) Bob/ 9 Feb(ruary)/ '90/ (flower drawing-flourish)." "Charlie & Pam" are Charles Plymell, the legendary poet, printer, publisher & Ultimate Literary Outlaw; & his wife & collaborator Pamela Beach Plymell. A key collectible in the Peters canon, greatly enhanced by this warm inscription from one decidedly iconoclastic, uncompromising poet to another. In near-fine condition with moderate rubbing, creasing & spotting to front, back covers & spine esp. upper areas; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; one short, closed tear at lower right edge-corner of spine & front cover; mild rubbing & spotting to edges of text block. Interior fine with loose but intact glue perfect-binding of page leaves to spine (apparently common to this production); tiny bumps, creases at corners of a few page leaves. Near Fine. [Item #3630]
