On Man & Nature

Mount Vernon, NY: Peter Pauper Press, 1960. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Interestingly enough, the day we happen to offer this edition of "On Man & Nature" online (July 12th, 2020) is the 203rd anniversary of the birth of the great American philosopher, nonconformist, thunder-clad essayist and sage--Henry David Thoreau. A personal favorite of your Devoted Managing Editor, Thoreau's inestimable contribution to American letters continues to resonate across cultures and continents near and far, unapologetically shaping the artistic, literary, and political movers-&-shakers who count themselves among his progeny. Emerson, Thoreau & Whitman laid the spiritual groundwork from which The Beat Generation's very sense of Beatitude. Take these aphorisms from section "8." gathered under the title "Relaxation:" "He is the man truly -- courageous, wise, ingenious -- who can use his thoughts and ecstasies as the material of fair and durable creations." No doubt, Allen Ginsberg would be the first to agree. "You must love the crust of the earth on which you dwell more than the sweet crust of any bread or cake. You must be able to extract nutriment out of a sand-heap. You must have so good an appetite as this, else you will live in vain." (Pg. 43). Here, too, we find echoes of Gary Snyder, and of Kerouac at his most Buddhistic. The eleven sections of selected aphorisms are as follows: "1. Alma Natura; 2. Of Aspiration; 3. Orientation; 4. Generation; 5. Mind Prints; 6. Of Courage; 7. Of Health; 8. Relaxation; 9. Re-Creation; 10. Human Faith; 11. The Great Spirit." Thoreau, as all American Transcendentalism, is "nutriment" for the weary, and affirmation for the fortified.
