Los Angeles, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1974. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Tom Clark. "Sky above California apartment building/ Sky above Damascus' whitest mosque/ Sky above Franz Schubert composing a nostalgic measure/ Sky above Vida Blue throwing smoke/ In all of you one common ingredient: Blue/ Blue is not white/ Death is white/ Blue is cool/ Blue is all right" ("Blue," pg. 11) A collection with the title poem (quoted above in its entirety) & many others by Tom Clark (1941-2018), the prolific poet, editor & biographer who has left us a rich legacy & is perhaps most exemplary of our category of "The Prolific & Underappreciated." The poems are succinct, eclectic & varied, with some concerning sports figures & women. There is always a mix of humor & profound observation unique to this gifted wordsmith, while influenced by his New York School & other contemporary colleagues. With illustrations, of sports figures in action & women, opposite some of the poems- uncredited but presumably by Clark, who was a talented artist as well as writer. This is from the limited hardcover edition of 200 copies, a beautiful & exemplary Black Sparrow production, hand-numbered & signed by Clark. This is copy No. 82/200. A most desirable collectible in the relatively early Clark canon. In very fine condition with only a tiny amount of wear to edges of front, back covers & spine; vertical rows of small blisters at/near edges of paper cover boards next to cloth spine-edges (certainly a minor production flaw-consequence); very light & sparse spotting at upper & side edges of text block. Interior very fine, substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #3639]
