London, England: MacGibbon & Kee, 1965. First UK Edition. Hardcover. "This volume collects together some of the outstanding work of individual writers; collectively, they have enough drive and talent to alter the vision of America. If not for the better then at least for the truer." (from front flap) A now-classic anthology of (mostly) prose & poetry by some of the foremost members of the mid-20th century literary avant-garde, from the Beat Generation, Black Mountain School & more. Edited & with introduction & contributions by LeRoi Jones (later Amiri Baraka), then at the center of this milieu. With contributions by William S. Burroughs, Robert Creeley, Diane di Prima, Edward Dorn, Hubert Selby Jr. & many more. First published in 1963 in the USA, this is the first UK edition issued in 1965 (Maynard & Miles, B10(c), pg. 92). Also included loosely here between rear endpaper & paste-down is a single sheet with printing on recto only, an order form for (we believe) the American edition of this volume from James F. Carr Books in NYC. A very important compilation of great, now-canonized writings from when they were still freshly provocative; of particular significance to WSB collectors. Book in near-fine condition with very light, sparse rubbing & scratching to front, back covers & spine; a tiny bit of wear to edges & corners of same. Interior near-fine with previous owner's signature whited-out on front blank endpaper; hand-redaction or underlinging in black felt ink below publisher & date reference on copyright page; small bumps & short, faint creases at corners & side edges of a few page leaves. Unclipped dust jacket near-fine with mild rubbing, browning, scratching & creasing to front, back covers, spine & flaps; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; residue of previous owner's non-cursive handwritten name, half-erased at blank area near upper right edge of front cover. Ephemera near-fine with mild wear, creasing & bumps at edges & corners, esp. right edge & corner where it protrudes very slightly from back cover edge, incl. one very short, closed horizontal tear.
