Adieu a Charlot: Second Populist Manifesto

San Francisco, CA: City Lights Booksellers & Publishers, 1978. First Printing. Single Folded Sheet. "Sons of Whitman sons of Poe/ sons of Lorca & Rimbaud/ or their dark daughters/ poets of another breath/ poets of another vision/ Who among you still speaks of revolution/ the locks from the doors/ in this revisionist decade?" (first lines) A rare broadside with the title poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, among the foremost living original members of the Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance as poet, publisher & proprietor of his iconic City Lights Bookstore, still with us as of this writing at age 101! As noted below the poem, it was written between 1975-1978 in Tepotzlan, Mexico & San Francisco. Published by Ferlinghetti's City Lights imprint, printed by Lawton Press in New Rochelle, NY, "A one woman company, dedicated to the loving care of all artistic works" per rear panel when folded. According to Cook's definitive City Lights Books Descriptive Bibliography, 1000 copies of this edition were printed during July 1978, & all points noted are present in this copy (see No. 127, pg. 135). Folded into quarters/ eight panels as issued, with printing on 6/8 panels, dimensions are appx. 11" x 17" unfolded; 5&1/2" x 8&1/2" folded. Another edition of this work was published about the same time by White Wail imprint, we consider this the true first edition as it was a City Lights production & is noted in Cook as above. A stirring, still quite timely Clarion Call of a poem; a most desirable Ferlinghetti rarity. In very fine condition, folded as noted above with attendant creases; very light rubbing & a touch of browning at front & rear panels; mild wear, a few tiny bumps & light, faint creases at/near edges & corners of same. Very Fine. [Item #3677]
