Hunter: The Strange and Savage Life of Hunter S. Thompson

New York, NY: E.P. Dutton, 1993. First Edition. Hardcover. Well, this is certainly interesting--a biography of the great Hunter S. Thompson from the esteemed Elle Magazine writer and columnist E. Jean Carroll. You may, like your Devoted Assistant Curator & Resident Archivist, have first heard of E. Jean Carroll from her mid-January, 2020 allegation of rape against President Trump--an incident Carroll says happened in a Manhattan department store in the mid-1990s. In typical Trump fashion, the president denies knowing her, despite E. Jean being photographed with The Donald at a party in 1987. You may have inadvertently also heard more from E. Jean in the Alex Gibney-directed contemporary classic "Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes," about the notorious founder of Fox News. Carroll had a talk show on Fox News' ancestor network, "America's Talking"--Ailes' first network, and the very first network in America to feature 24/7 Talk Show programming. But no more of that--because like E. Jean & like Third Mind Books, you are a Devoted Thompsonian--so it's time to talk of The Good Doctor. "Here are the submachine guns, the bags of cocaine, the blotters of acid, the big red cars, the bottles of whiskey, and the succulent succession of editorial assistants." (from Front Flap). According to the half-title page, the book also comprehends "...an Account of His Miraculous Existence From the Time of His Birth to the Present in Chronological Order;" includes "...the Seduction and Torture of His Own Biographer;" "The Whole Exhibiting a View of Debauchery and Felony Never Seen in a Literary Man Since the Marquis de Sade." It claims to be largely authored by E. Jean's "Dukean" fictional avatar, "Laetitia Snap." We really don't know what to say about this book--it sure as hell wasn't written by Timothy Denevi or Jann Wenner. Book in very fine condition, virtually as new. Dust-jacket in very fine condition with only slightest shelf-wear and few tiny scratches to front cover at center-middle below illustrated title. Very Fine / very fine. [Item #3702]
