Bare Bones

Flint, MI: Bamberger Books, 1995. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Signed by Kenward Elmslie. A chapbook with the title poem by Kenward Elmslie, the noted poet-artist associated with the New York School, especially his editorship of & contributions to the "Z" magazine series; & with Joe Brainard (1942-1994), the brilliant poet-artist who was Elmslie's personal & creative partner. This poem is an elegy-remembrance of Brainard, who had died of AIDS the year before this production. Compelling, poignant & with many references to the great poets in whose circle they lived & worked. With photograph of a nude Brainard with cigarette on front cover, uncredited but presumably taken by Elmslie. First edition as stated on copyright page, which refers to a special edition of 26 lettered & signed copies. Although this copy is from the trade edition of unknown limitation & unlettered, Elmslie has hand-written his signature in black ink below his printed name on title page. From the library of Ken Mikolowski, who with his late wife Ann founded & conducted the legendary Alternative Press, which published many luminaries of the Beat Generation, New York & Black Mountain Schools, etc. The Mikolowskis were close friends & associates of Elmslie. A rare & particularly meaningful Elmslie collectible with resonant associations & provenance. In very fine condition with only very light rubbing & a few short, faint creases to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; very small area of light staining at lower side edge, rightmost lower edge & corner of text block. Interior very fine with only small bump-waves at upper corners of page leaves; slight bleeding of stain noted above onto lower blank corners of last seven of same. Very Fine. [Item #3714]
