Sumac: An Active Anthology Vol. III No. II (Winter 1971)

Fremont, MI: The Sumac Press, 1971. First Printing. Softcover. Signed by Clayton Eshleman. This vintage number of the prestigious (mostly) poetry & prose journal edited by Michigan eminences Dan Gerber & the late Jim Harrison features contributions by canonical American author Sherwood Anderson (short story "Alice," 1929); Douglas Blazek, Clayton Eshleman, Gerald Locklin, Gerald Mac Low, Richard Tillinghast & many others. On the title page, Eshleman, the esteemed & prolific poet, editor, educator & our dear friend & mentor who resides near us here in Michigan, has hand-written his signature in bold black ink at blank upper right edge. Eshleman's contribution in this issue is a prose-poem placed in the Criticism section (pgs. 144-150) which we believe to be a critique-of-a-critique addressed to another acclaimed poet, but let the reader decide... With beautiful photographs, mostly of natural scenes, by co-editor Gerber & John Unterecker (who also contributes two poems opposite & following one of his images); notes on contributors, a few contemporary ads etc. Another very rich, rewarding issue in this most collectible series, especially with the signature of one of its distinguished contributors. In exceptionally very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; slightest rubbing to edges of text block; one tiny spot at side edge of same. Interior very fine with only miniscule bumps at corners of a few page leaves; otherwise substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #3718]
