The Saturday Evening Post March 9, 1968 Issue with: LOOK RFK Memorial Issue

Philadelphia, PA; New York, NY: The Curtis Publishing Company; Cowles Communications, Inc., 1968. First Printings. Stapled Wrappers. Two original vintage American magazine issues devoted to Robert Francis Kennedy, brother & Attorney General to President John F. Kennedy & later presidential candidate in whom many people carried hope until he too was killed: (1) The Saturday Evening Post issue of March 9, 1968 with cover article "Bobby Kennedy Sworn In as the Acting President...it could happen: The picking of the President, 1968" by Russell Baker. Baker (1925-2019), the great American journalist who would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize twice, conjures a then-credible scenario in which RFK replaces Hubert Humphrey as the Vietnam War-beleaguered LBJ's running mate & becomes president through the political process after the election. With appearances by Nelson Rockefeller, John Lindsay, Ronald Reagan & other contemporary political figures. Also in this issue, articles on ESP, actress Vanessa Redgrave, NYC's Bellevue Hospital, an installment of mystery fiction by the iconic Agatha Christie & more. With many exemplary contemporary ads, etc. (2) Special memorial issue of LOOK Magazine, "RFK: The Bob Kennedy we knew by the Editors of LOOK." As we know with hindsight into reality, LBJ opted out of running for a second full term as president at the end of March 1968, RFK directly ran for president, & was assasinated in Los Angeles in early June. This special issue (undated but certainly published shortly after RFK's death during 1968) spans his life & career during its final crucial decade with many images, from the much-seen to candid & theretofore unseen, & biographical-editorial articles. No ads or any other subject other than RFK & the remarkable milestones of his life- & death. Large-format magazines in stapled covers. Two real-time contemporary relics of the life & legacy of RFK that evoke the hope, turmoil & tragedy of 1968. (1) in good-to-near-fine condition with mild rubbing, scratching, creasing & fading to front, back covers & stapled spine; mild wear & some small bumps, creases to edges & corners of covers; more serious wear & extensive closed tearing at spine; moderate browning & spotting to edges of text block; staples in process of rusting with minimal bleeding.
