London, England: Phoenix, 1996. First Abridged Edition Thus. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by R.S. Thomas (to Thomas Rain Crowe). "Shelley dreamed it. Now the dream decays,/ The props crumble. The familiar ways/ Are stale with tears trodden underfoot./ The heart's flower withers at the root./ Bury it, then, in history's sterile dust./ The slow years shall tame your tawny lust." ("Song at the Year's Turning," first stanza, pg. 4). A small collection of poems by R(onald) S(tuart) Thomas (1913-2000), a proud Welshman & Anglican priest who is "...widely recognized as one of the finest poets writing in English in the second half of the twentieth century." (from "A Note on R.S. Thomas," pg. 57) This edition is an abridged version of The Collected Poems 1945-1990, published three years earlier during 1993. On the title page, Thomas has hand-written & signed in blue ink: "Joy!/ (signed) RS Thomas/ X./ (Letter &/ reply, requests/ to follow)/ -." From the library of Thomas Rain Crowe, to whom Thomas wrote this inscription though he did not address it. Crowe, an acclaimed poet & publisher, was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). Among Crowe's many deep interests is the culture, literature & language of Wales. Softcover original, first edition thus. A unique & desirable Thomas rarity with very significant poet-to-poet provenance & association. In fine condition with mild rubbing, moderate creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing, spotting & browning to edges of text block. Interior fine with light browning mostly to blank margins & edges of page leaves; light-but-large spots at inner covers & endpapers, including but not substantially effecting inscription-signature page.
