"grandfather eagle/ which art in heaven/ thou soarest in heaven/ thou makest my blood/ to sing/ sing/ sing" (Eagle Song, pg. 8) A collection of poems by Gogisgi/Carroll Arnett (1927-1997), A Native American poet & professor of Cherokee-French ancestry who at one time was a Deer Clan Chief of the Overhill Band of the Cherokee Nation. Several of the poems are titled & printed in both phonetic Cherokee language & English, most are in English with occasional Cherokee words which are defined in footnotes. With evocative, relevant front cover & interior illustrations by the Native American artist Kahionhes. Published as a production of the Cross-Cultural Review, Chapbook 20 as noted on front cover. First edition as stated on copyright page. On the title page, Arnett has hand-written & signed: "For Thomas Rain Crowe-/ All peace to you, brother./ (signed) Smoke/ Sept(ember) 1984." Thomas Rain Crowe, the noted poet & publisher, was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). Crowe was born, raised & has long returned to & lived in rural North Carolina, where he has been greatly influenced by & absorbed the local Native Americans & their culture, indeed even changing his surname from Dawson. "Smoke" is the English translation of the Cherokee word "Gogisgi," Arnett's Cherokee name. A very rare & desirable Native American literary collectible, especially with this significant poet-to-poet association & provenance. In very fine condition with only slight rubbing & occasional spotting to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; light spotting to edges of text block.
