Spartanburg, SC: Holocene Publishing, 2001. First Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed (twice) by John Lane to Thomas Rain Crowe. "On October 24, 2000, twelve students and three teachers from Sayre School in Lexington, Kentucky set out into the Red River Gorge for a photography hike. We were led by poet and essayist John Lane and photographer Mark Olencki, both of whom were visiting Sayre as part of the Books Alive author series...What follows is a journal of student writing and photography compiled on that trip...Here is documentation of the ineffable, a record of our journey." (from Preface by Jeremy L.C. Jones) A record in words & images of a journey into the Gorge inspired by canonical author Wendell Berry's essay "The Unforeseen Wilderness." Edited by Jones & John Lane, the acclaimed South Carolinian poet, environmentalist & educator. With an introductory essay by Lane & a concluding essay by Jones; noted photographer Olencki edited the many stunning student photographs. A beautiful production that captures the spirit & essence of this quintessential adventure by young Americans into their wilderness, with Berry occasionally quoted & referred to extensively throughout. Larger chapbook, first edition, first printing of February 2001 as stated on copyright page. On shorter title page, Lane has hand-written & signed, very near the time of publication: "For Thomas,/ One more for the/ John Lane shelf./ Love,/ (signed) John 6/17/01/ Spartanburg, SC." Crowe is a close friend & colleague of Lane, & a long-time North Carolinian. A superb literary-photographic collectible, with significant poet-to-brother poet association & provenance.
