The Paris Review Vol. 12 No. 46 (Spring 1969)
Paris, France: Sadruddin Aga Khan, 1969. First Printing. Softcover. This vintage number of the venerable literary journal then-chiefly edited by George Plimpton features a deep & insightful very-late-in-life interview with the great American writer John Dos Passos (1896-1970), author of the canonical USA Trilogy, conducted by David Sanders & preceded by a facsimile manuscript page of his later novel, Mid-century (which reminds us almost of a Burroughsian cut-up). Also in this issue are contributions of fiction by John Metcalfe & others; a portfolio of imaginative art-&-writing works by Rene Bertholo; & a very rich gathering of Beat-&-Beyond eminent poets including Ted Berrigan, Clark Coolidge, Kenneth Koch, Ron Padgett, Aram Saroyan & Philip Whalen. With notes on contributors, contemporary ads (look for Allen Ginsberg's Planet News, Anne Waldman & Lewis Warsh's Angel Hair journal...) etc. Trade-format softcover in sewn binding, complete with intact sheet of subscription cards. Another important, rewarding issue in this most collectible series. In near-fine condition with mild rubbing, light browning to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases to edges & corners of same; several moderate-to-large but fairly faint angled creases at lower left area of front cover; one short but deep crease at mid-right lower margin/ edge of back cover that decreasingly echoes through last thirty or so page leaves; very light rubbing & occasional spotting to edges of text block. Interior fine with only crease-echoes noted above; small-to-tiny bumps, faint creases to corners of page leaves. Near Fine. [Item #3753]
