The Irish for No

ISBN: 0916390292
Winston-Salem, NC: Wake Forest University Press, 1987. First American Edition. Softcover. Signed by Ciaran Carson to Thomas Rain Crowe. "The Irish for No represents (Ciaran) Carson's return to poetry after a decade's devotion to the making and maintenance of traditional music. In (Carson's first collection) The New Estate he writes of Belfast, "The city is a map of the city." In The Irish for No, Carson becomes the cartographer of that aggrieved city. In lines that extend and roll like whips, he conveys the inflection and flavor of the living districts of Belfast." (from back cover) A collection of poems by Ciaran Carson (1948-2019), the celebrated Northern Irish poet & novelist. Larger-format softcover original in sewn binding, first American edition published during November 1987, preceded by Irish edition issued four months earlier per copyright page. On the title page, Carson has hand-written & signed in black ink: "For Thomas Crowe/ (signed) Ciaran C." Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed North Carolinian poet & publisher, was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). An especially rare Carson collectible, further enriched with this important association & provenance. In very fine condition with only light rubbing & a touch of browning to front, back covers (both depicting a map of Belfast) & spine; very light wear & a few miniscule bumps at edges & corners of same; light spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at upper corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3766]
