"On a bitter country lane, among feverous fish,/ the endless retinue of cripples and cattle,/ he abandons the circle for the orb and for the Sphere." ("Each Particle Has the Whole Universe For its Field of Activity," first stanza, pg. 8) A chapbook of poems by Osten Sjostrand (1925-2006), among the most prominent Swedish poets of the twentieth century. Translated into English by Robin Fulton, & with an informative editors' (or translator's?) introduction. Following the poems, there is a short section of excerpts from Sjostrand's prose writings. On blank inner front cover, Sjostrand has hand-written, signed & dated the year after publication: "For Tom Dawson/ With my very best wishes/ San Francisco/ Poetry Festival 1976/ (signed) Osten Sjostrand." "Tom Dawson" is the birth name of Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). Crowe was the main impresario behind the first-ever San Francisco Poetry Festival held during 1976, which Sjostrand referred to above & attended. This first & subsequent Festivals were landmark literary events that Crowe describes at length in SFSF.
