The Paris Review Vol. 14 No. 57 (Spring 1974)

New York, NY: Sadruddin Aga Khan, 1974. First Printing. Softcover. This vintage, official 20th Anniversary issue of the prestigious literary journal then-chiefly edited by George Plimpton features lengthy, very insightful interviews of two great icons of twentieth-century literature: W.H. Auden, conducted by Michael Newman & with a facsimile manuscript page; & Christopher Isherwood, conducted by W.I. Scobie & preceded by same. Interestingly, no mention is made that Auden had died during September of the previous year (1973). Also in this issue are contributions of fiction by Grace Paley & others; a roster of much-varied & important poets including Richard Frost, David Ignatow, David Kelly, W.S. Merwin & Pablo Neruda (a special 'portfolio' of translated poems as a tribute following his death the previous year) & many more; & a portfolio of artworks by Red Grooms. With notes on contributors, contemporary ads. Trade-format softcover in glued binding, the first to be published in NYC rather than Paris per an editor's notice. A particularly historic & significant issue in this eminently collectible series. In fine condition with mild rubbing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; light rubbing & spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine, complete with intact subscription cards for the Review & Harper's Magazine & with only tiny bumps, creases at mostly upper corners of some page leaves; sparse spot-staining at blank side margins/edges of a few of same. Fine. [Item #3805]
