Two Broadsides: "Somewhere in the West- A Riddle" with: Untitled ("I drift, out of reach...")

Santa Barbara, CA; n/p: University Center Gallery, U.C. Santa Barbara, 1983; Unknown. First Printings. Single Sheets. Both broadsides signed by Tom Clark. "The closer the bone the sweeter the bite:/ Among dark thoughts of slips between/ Cups and lips, afternoon meets night/ In the shadowed Hopper picture window" ("Somewhere in the West- A Riddle," first stanza) Two very rare broadsides by Tom Clark (1941-2018), the American poet, editor, novelist, biographer & artist whose brilliant, prolific oeuvre deserves a revived interest by scholars & collectors: (1) "Somewhere in the West- A Riddle" (appx. 7" x 12"), with the title poem on recto, hand-signed by Clark below his printed name. On verso is an announcement of an exhibit of Clark's "Recent Paintings" at the University Center Gallery, U.C. Santa Barbara, which took place during July 11-22, 1983. A spare, beautiful production on pumpkin-orange handmade paper. (2) Untitled, undated poem (appx. 9&3/4 " square, first line: "I drift, out of reach of infinite Idiot Monkeys") apparently letter-pressed onto cut portion recto of a map of Hawaiian islands, with portion of "Hawaiian Island Reporting Service/ Flight Watch Stations and Check Points" map-guide on verso. Clark has hand-written his signature below the printed poem near lower edge of recto. This may very well be a one-of-a-kind artwork-broadside produced by Clark himself. Two very desirable pieces of Clark ephemera, one quite probably unique onto itself. (1) in very fine, substantially mint condition with no discernible bumps or flaws, lower edge slightly jagged as issued on handmade paper. (2) very fine with vertical crease across surface where once folded; slight browning & some small, faint creasing to surfaces; mild wear & a few tiny bumps, creases to thin edges & corners. Note: the nature of these items require that they be shipped flat, & extra mailing charges may be required. Very Fine. [Item #3869]
