The Aranea Constellation

Minneapolis, MN: Rain Taxi Inc., 1998. Limited First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. "An Aranea centered in her web, afloat yet anchored between ground and sky. The natural mind of the earth always spinning. Her one "decision," where to start the web. A small male enters, testing, sounding, the thread. At the center of the orb, after mating, the penetrator is killed." So begins this mysterious prose poem-essay-evocative musing by Clayton Eshleman, the venerable, award-winning poet & educator who has long resided near us here in Michigan, our friend & mentor. Eshleman's vast knowledge of ancient cave paintings & other of his favorite topics are distilled in this work. With appropriate spider-themed front cover & title page artwork by Irving Petlin. A production of Rain Taxi, publishers of the noted eponymous literary journal-review, No. 1 in its "Brainstorm Series" of chapbooks. This is one of 274 un-numbered copies, of a total edition of 300 including 26 that were lettered & signed. Five years later (2003), Eshleman's Juniper Fuse: Upper Paleolithic Imagination & the Construction of the Underworld was published, a larger work that includes this text. A rare & desirable Eshleman collectible, in very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; lightest rubbing & spotting to lower edge of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3871]
