Slickrock: Notes from the Blizzard of 1993

n/p: James A. Privette, Jr., 2000. Limited First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Inscribed & signed by James A. Privette, Jr. to Thomas Rain Crowe. "It was mid-March, almost springtime in the Southern mountains, when three friends set out for some hiking and camping in the Slickrock Wilderness. Soon, however, they were caught in the middle of one of the worst winter storms ever seen in Western North Carolina. Facing frostbite, dwindling supplies, and sub-zero temperatures, they struggled through hip-deep snow and crawled over 10-foot drifts. And they tried to avoid thinking about failure." (back cover) A diaristic, straightforward account of James A. Privette & friends' adventure when they were caught in a record snowstorm while hiking in the wilds of North Carolina & were eventually rescued. A privately printed chapbook production with front cover reproduction of a painting by Privette ("Winter Ridge"), & appendices with map & miscellaneous. Per colophon, one of an edition of 200 copies (hors commerce) published in December 2000, of which 20 copies were lettered & signed by Privette & the remaining 180 copies were hand-numbered. This is copy No. 131/180. Though this copy was not among those designated for signature, Privette has hand-written & signed on the title page: "TRC-/ A tale of adventure in your/ home land. Best Wishes-/ (signed) James A. Privette, Jr." "TRC" is Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). Crowe was born, raised & has long returned to live in rural North Carolina. A unique American literary-historical rarity with significant association & provenance between North Carolinian writers. In very fine condition with only a bit of rubbing & a few very small spots in blank areas of front, back covers & stapled spine; a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with inner staple-hooks just beginning to rust with hardly any discernible bleeding; otherwise substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #3893]
