Asheville, NC: Native Ground Music, 1995. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers; Folded Sheet. Inscribed & signed by Doug Elliot to Thomas Rain Crowe. "This book is like a bridge in many ways- a bridge between the arts and the sciences; between the disciplines of folklore, music, history, biology, and ecology; and between the past and the present. Now it might not look like the steel suspension spans you're used to. In fact, it might seem more like an old foot-log across a muddy creek, but don't worry, the log is strong, the creek's not that deep anyway, and there's some mighty interesting stuff on the other side." Thus begins the introduction to this delightful compendium of folk wisdom, tales & song lyrics with musical notation by Doug Elliot- A popular naturalist, backwoods denizen & storyteller-performer who resides in rural North Carolina. With many wonderful illustrations by Elliot on front cover & throughout. On the title page, Elliot has hand-written & signed: "For Tom Crowe/ Hop on the trail!/ (signed) Doug Elliot." "Tom Crowe" is Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). Crowe & Elliot are kindred North Carolinians with an abiding love & knowledge of its land & culture. Also present is a promotional catalog-order form sheet printed on both sides, folded horizontally into four sections, & featuring among other productions a CD or tape recording of the many songs here, under the same title & presumably performed by Elliot. This ephemeral relic is undoubtedly superseded by Elliot's web site (dougelliot.com/naturalist) where many later editions of these items are still available as of this writing- though not this collectible first edition Elliot classic with very relevant poet-to-poet association & provenance. Booklet in very fine condition with only very light rubbing to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; light spotting to edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of page leaves. Ephemera very fine, folded as noted above with only a few short, faint creases emanating from folds. Very Fine.
