Selections from Paroles

San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 1968. First Edition, Sixth Printing. Softcover. "In the years immediately following World War II, Jacques Prevert spoke more directly to and for the French who had come of age under the Occupation than any other contemporary poet, if the enormous success of Paroles is any indication. First published in 1946, it was almost immediately reprinted...Yet the present volume is the first book by Prevert to be published in the United States- a curious fact, considering the affinities that exist between his best writing and such American "poetry of dissent" as that emanating from various literary undergrounds here." (back cover) A selection of poems from the now-classic collection by Jacques Prevert (1900-1977), the great French poet & screenwriter. Translated & with an introduction by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, among the primary figures of the original Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance as poet, publisher & bookseller- & still with us at age 101 as of this writing. The ninth number of Ferlinghetti's iconic City Lights Books Pocket Poets Series, originally published in 1958 (without the above-noted introduction dated 1964). This is the sixth printing of February 1968 as noted on copyright page, still in the first edition format (see Cook, No. 10, pgs. 11-13). An essential Prevert-Ferlinghetti-City Lights collectible in an intermediate but still-rare form. In fine condition with only mild rubbing, browning & sparse spotting to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps, creases to edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing, browning & spotting to upper edge of text block; much less to side & lower edges of same. Interior very fine with only very small creases, tiny bumps at upper corners of page leaves. Fine. [Item #3911]
