A Slovene Sampler

New York, NY: Ugly Duckling Presse, 2008. Limited First Edition. Sewn Wrappers. "I love to watch you wash money/ in Ron Padgett's bathtub & he doesn't love it/ & calls the police & you're trying to explain/ & nobody gets it no I don't even get it" (Gregor Podlogar, "The Dark Side of New York: Schuyler," first stanza) A gathering of five poets from Slovenia, all translated into English by various translators, often in collaboration with the poets. According to colophon, "This chapbook was printed in an edition of 440 copies on the special occasion of the Slovene Poetry Weekend in September 2008 during which the five poets presented here brought their poetry to New York City in a public program..." As noted, among the venues where this event took place was The Poetry Project at St. Marks Church, the revered Beat-&-Beyond shrine. A well-made chapbook production in sewn wrappers, this copy is among 400 with facsimile signatures of the poets on front cover; 40 copies in brown wrappers with the poets' actual signatures were also produced. A very interesting & collectible literary rarity. In very fine condition with only very light rubbing & a few small, mostly faint spots to front, back covers & sewn spine; very light wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps & small, light creases at upper corners & edges of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3924]
