Connemara, Ireland: Clo lar-Chonnachta, 2002. First Edition. Softcover; Compact Disc; Single Sheet. "Gearoid Mac Lochlainn's poetry is published here for the first time with English translations by various Irish writers and the poet himself. This ground-breaking new poetry explores the shifting relationships and conflicts between the Irish language and the English language in Ireland. His poems, poetic personae and recorded performance raise questions about the role of tradition in urban literature, Irish identities and the nature of translation itself which the author sometimes uses in a subversive way to play tricks on his audience. Gearoid also gives us new insight into his native Belfast looking unflinchingly at the legacy of the troubles and colonialism in the North. This is an original, sometimes shocking new voice which extends the scope of Irish language literature." (back cover) A collection of poems by Gearoid Mac Lochlainn, a highly acclaimed bilingual Irish poet. The poems are presented in the Irish language, & translated by Mac Lochlainn himself &/or by various translators on opposite pages. With an introduction by the leading Irish poet Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, in Irish & then English as titled "The Real McCoy." Also present as issued is a compact disc of Mac Lochlainn reading his poetry at inner back cover in an affixed clear jacket. Trade-format softcover original, first edition. Included loosely is publisher's stationary-sheet with printing on recto, with the following hand-written inscription by one of its officials: "Hi Thomas-/ Enclosed is copy of Sruth Teangacha as requested. Hope you/ enjoy it. Our distributor in America (underlined in pencil) is Dufour Editions (circled), Chester Springs, PA. (underlined)/ (phone number) Many Thanks & Best Wishes,/ (signed) Caitriana(?) N. Bhaaill, Marketing." "Thomas" is Thomas Rain Crowe, the noted poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting From San Francisco, Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). Among Crowe's interests & areas of expertise are the languages & cultures of Ireland, Scotland & Wales. The following year (2003), Crowe conducted an extensive interview with Mac Lochlainn which was published in the Asheville (North Carolina) Poetry Review and can be viewed on its website (www.ashevillepoetryreview.com/...with-gearoid-mac-lochlainn). On otherwise blank verso is hand-written name & address of the American publisher referred to on recto, presumably in Crowe's hand.
