The Years As Catches: First poems (1939-1946)

Berkeley, CA: Oyez Press, 1966. Limited First Edition. Softcover. "These are poems of an irregularity. From the beginning I had sought not the poem as a discipline or paradigm of my thought and feeling but as a source of feeling and thought, following the movement of an inner impulse and tension rising in the flow of returning vowel sounds and in measuring stresses that formed phrases of a music for me, having to do with mounting waves of feeling and yet incorporating an inner opposition of reproof of such feeling." (from Introduction, pg. i) A collection of the earliest poems by Robert Duncan (1919-1988), among the greatest 20th century American poets associated with the Beat Generation, San Francisco Renaissance (of which he is considered a Founding Father) & the Black Mountain School. With a very insightful introduction by Duncan (quoted above); bibliography following poems. Duncan was among the first American writers to openly affirm his homosexuality, especially with his groundbreaking essay "The Homosexual in Society" (1944). Many of these poems have homoerotic themes & images, & Duncan discusses this at length in his introduction. Trade-format softcover, an exemplary Oyez production, one of 1800 copies from a total edition of 2000 with 200 copies in boards (see Bertholf, A20(a), pgs. 72-73). An essential, foundational collectible in the Duncan oeuvre. In very fine condition with only mild rubbing & sunning to front, esp. back covers & spine; minor wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; mild browning & spotting to lower & esp. upper edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3943]
