Bruegel

Paris, France: Henri Screpel, 1977. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. "For this is indeed Bruegel's message to our time; above the wailing of death wandering in our lives there may prevail, if only we can discover them, the secret harmonies that encompass life's road...The journey is long, but the mountain tells us- with Bruegel- that he will point us the way to the land of genuine magic." (from "Introduction to Bruegel" by Claude Mettra, pg. 45) A large & luxurious "Coffee Table Book" survey of the timelessly profound art of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525?-1569), the great Dutch-Flemish master painter. With a lengthy, erudite & most informative introduction (quoted above) by the noted French art historian Claude Mettra (1922-2005); followed by beautifully reproduced color images of Bruegel's major works, in full & details- including of course our favorite, The Triumph of Death (1562-63), which was partially reproduced on the dust jacket of the first edition of William S. Burroughs' Cities of the Red Night (1981). All text in English. This appears to be the first English-language edition published the year after a French-language edition (1976), printed in France by the same publisher in association with "Barron's, Woodbury, New York" as noted on title & copyright pages. With slipcase on which is reproduced the same Bruegel painting as across front, back covers & spine of the volume (Hunters in the Snow, 1565). A beautiful production; & a most enjoyable, collectible Bruegel homage. Book in very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Slipcase very fine but for one short, closed tear at upper edge of bottom panel; very slight wear to edges & corners; & so we designate this as merely fine to our exacting standards. Very Fine / (Slipcase) Fine. [Item #3947]
