The Intimate Journals of Charles Baudelaire

New York, NY; Hollywood, CA: Marcel Rodd Co., Inc., 1947. First Edition. Hardcover. "Christopher Isherwood's translation of this heretofore unavailable classic of autobiography has the same sharply incisive qualities as the great poet's original words, thoughts, and bitterly unhappy feelings...W.H. Auden, his long time friend and collaborator, and equally distinguished, has contributed an important interpretative introduction." (from front flap) The intimate diaristic musings of Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), the iconic French poet who was among the ultimate exemplars of the Bohemian Parisian flaneur- litterateur (& a direct ancestor-inspiration of the Beat Generation poets a century later). Translated into English & with an informative preface by Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986), the legendary Anglo-American writer; & with a deeply insightful introduction by W.H. Auden (1907-1973), Isherwood's personal-professional friend & colleague indeed- & among the most brilliant, popular poets of the twentieth century- perhaps ever. With reproductions of Baudelaire's own doodle-drawn portraits of himself & others from his journals. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition of 1947. Interestingly, place of publisher is NYC per jacket covers & rear flap; Hollywood per title page. An essential collectible for English-speaking readers of the Baudelaire canon, as well as devotees of Auden & Isherwood. Book in fine condition with minor rubbing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; two somewhat large but barely discernible circular impressions & one small, faint whitish spot-stain on blank blue surface of front cover; mild rubbing, browning & sparse spotting, scratching to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only small areas of ink-blotting at blank inner front cover paste-down & esp. front endpaper; mild browning mostly at blank margins of page leaves. Dust jacket in fair-to-good condition with moderate rubbing, scratching & creasing to front, back covers, spine & flaps; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases to edges & corners of same; several small areas of paper loss only lightly effecting printed text at front cover & esp. spine edges-corners. We note that, as shown in images, the front & back covers of this jacket are (uncommonly) identical, with no loss of printed text on back cover. Fine / Fair-to-Good. [Item #3951]
