The Conquerors
Sudbury, MA: Water Row Press, 1998. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Published just before Ray Bremser's death, this beautifully-produced volume contains a number of Jazz poems--a specialty and focus point for Bremser. In sprawling Olsonian stanzas which crowd the page in a bebop clamor, Bremser's stream-of-consciousness riffs tumble along, chorus after chorus spilling successively onto the page. Bremser, himself no stranger to syringes full of methedrine, here, too exudes frenetic splendor. The book is broken up into three parts: "I. Riffs Katchaturian," "II. The Conquerors," and III. "Born Again." One of 100 signed copies released by Jeffrey Weinberg's Water Row Books in 1998 without dust-jacket, as issued. As such, this copy is signed and numbered by Bremser--perhaps one of the last signatures he was able to execute before his death. Signature in black pen ink reads: "Best Wishes, / Ray Bremser / 58/100." An essential Bremser collectible. Book in very fine condition, virtually as issued by publisher. Very Fine. [Item #3959]
