A Fall From Grace

Berkeley, CA: Aldebaran Review, 1976. Limited First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Inscribed & signed by Steve Sanfield to Thomas Rain Crowe. "If anyone asks for me/ tell them I've gone/ looking for myself." (final untitled poem) A collection of poems by Steve Sanfield (1937-2015), the prolific American poet & children's book author who was notably a Freedom Rider for civil rights during the early 1960s. Though his style is somewhat traditional & romantic, Sanfield was acclaimed by some of the key poets of the Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance, including Michael McClure, who declared him to be "the master of American Haiku" (as the quoted poem above demonstrates). With reproduction of a beautiful drawing by Jacqueline Bellon on front cover & title page. An attractive chapbook production published as the twenty-second number of the Aldebaran Review in a limited edition of 250 copies, of which 33 were hand-sewn & signed per colophon. Although this copy is among the 217 with stapled wrappers & officially unsigned, Sanfield has hand-written & signed on blank front endpaper: "For Tom Dawson/ "across the hills"/ (signed) Steve Sanfield/ (drawing of star/ compass)." "Tom Dawson" is Thomas Rain Crowe (Dawson is his birth name), the noted poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting From San Francisco, Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). Crowe mentions Sanfield as part of Gary Snyder's Kuksu poets' community of northern California during this period in SFSF (pg. 172). An essential, desirable Sanfield rarity with very significant poet-to-poet association & provenance. In very fine condition with only mild rubbing to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; mild spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only small, light spot-stains at middle of one page leaf (unpaginated, second page of "Clouds and Rain," "Acceptance") not effecting legibility of text; tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3971]
