Buffalo, NY; Seattle, WA: Shuffaloff Press; Before Columbus Foundation/ University of Washington, 1989. First Printings. Loose Folded Sheets; Bound Folded Sheets. Before Columbus Review issue signed by contributor Tom Clark. Two literary journal issues featuring contributions by Tom Clark, the great American poet, editor, publisher, novelist, biographer & artist who resides in our pantheon of "The Prolific & Underappreciated," along with other most distinguished contributors: (1) intent.: Letter of Talk, Thinking & Document, Vol. 1 No. 1, Spring 1989. This first number of the literary journal edited by John Clarke features Clark's poem, "Nehru's Nation"; along with two short poems about classic films, "Lost Weekend (Billy Wilder 1945)" & "Fool for Love (Robert Altman, 1985)." Also in this issue is a heretofore-unpublished essay, "Totality: The Methodology Is the Form" by the great (indeed "Maximus") Charles Olson, the legendary Black Mountain School-&-Beyond physical & intellectual Giant, found undated among his papers; two short poems by Beat-&-Beyond primary poet Ed Sanders; a dialogue/ interview between editor Clarke & Joe Napora, the passionate & prolific poet, publisher & activist, entitled "Why No Zen?"; the poem "Pursuing the Millennium" by Napora & more. (2) Before Columbus Review: A Quarterly Review of Multicultural Literature, Vol. 1 No.s 2&3, Fall-Winter 1989. This double-issue number of the literary journal published at the University of Washington & edited by J.J. Phillips features a review by Clark of four scholarly volumes by or about Christopher Columbus including The Log of Christopher Columbus (translated by Robert H. Fuson). The review takes the form of a poem entitled "An Obsession" & is located on the back cover of the issue. Just below the poem-review & a short biographical note, Clark has hand-written his signature in bold red ink, slightly overlapping with reproduction of a vintage Columbus-era illustration. Also in this issue is an essay based on a speech delivered at UW by the venerable African-American poet & novelist Ishmael Reed entitled "Beyond Columbus" (Reed is the founder of the Before Columbus Foundation at UW which co-published this journal) & much more. Two very rare literary-scholarly collectibles, linked by the presence of Tom Clark & enriched by other notables, one with Clark's signature at his contribution. (1) in very fine condition, loose folded sheets with only very slight rubbing, occasional spotting & some short, faint creases to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same. (2) very fine, bound folded sheets with only very slight rubbing, occasional spotting & some light, faint creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear, a few tiny bumps, closed tears, pinholes & light, faint creases at edges & corners of same; several light vertical crease-folds across surfaces of back cover (not effecting text or Clark signature) which extend through final blank page leaf.
