Baton Rouge, LA: Louisiana State University Press, 1978. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. Signed by Fred Chappell. "It is Henry, as everyone knows, who's really the monster,/ Not the innocent wistful crazy-quilt of dead flesh/ We remember as being in love with flowers and children like flowers." (Part IX, "Burning the Frankenstein Monster: Elegiac Letter to Richard Dillard," first three lines, pg. 31) The title poem in eleven parts by Fred Chappell, the venerable & award-winning American poet who was the Poet Laureate of his native State of North Carolina during 1997-2002. First trade-format softcover edition, published simultaneously with a hardcover edition in 1978. On the title page, Chappell has hand-written his signature below his printed name. An important collectible in the Chappell canon. In fine condition with mild rubbing, fading & scratching to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; previous seller's small price sticker at lower left of back cover (slightly obscuring name of publisher & original price); mild spotting to edges of text block. Interior fine with light spot-staining to mostly blank areas of some page leaves; small half-circle mark or stamp at right margin of pg. 37; hand-written correction ("v" over different letter in "vigil," possibly by Chappell himself) on pg. 40; tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Fine. [Item #4001]
