New York, NY: Viking Press; Grove Press, 1973; 2009. First Edition(s). (1) (Maynard & Miles, A23, pp. 83-84). In one of the earliest book-length critical studies of WSB’s work, the lauded “William Burroughs: the Algebra of Need,” Eric Mottram writes: “‘Exterminator!’ is a call for help, a cry of surprise, a shout of recognition, and a demand for the agent and his god to be exposed. Its formal virtuosity is placed strictly at the disposal of a definition of history and necessity, and an enquiry into the virulence of our addictions to conflict and the potentiality of our dreams of revolt.” (pp. 222-223). A book-length compilation of “routines,” “Exterminator!” is written in the relatively clearer post- cut-up style employed by WSB from “The Wild Boys” (New York, NY: Grove Press, 1971) onward. First published in this hardcover First Edition of 1973 and soon followed by various, mostly softcover editions, “Exterminator!” belongs in any serious WSB collection. “A distant cry echoes down cobblestone streets through all the grey basements up the outside stairs to a windy blue sky. Exterminator!” Book in very fine condition, quite clean, with only the most minute rubbing to front cover at lower right-hand corner on bug graphic; very likely as issued by publisher, as no evidence of bumps, etc. are present. Dust-jacket in near-fine condition with modest rubbing to front, back covers and spine-edge of back cover; slight shelf-wear to fine-edges of same; slight, scattered hairline nicks and scratches visible, but barely. A well-preserved dust-jacket that has clearly (and safely) remained in its protective covering for years. (2) Added to this package is a sealed First Edition, First Printing of the 50th Anniversary Edition of WSB’s immortal classic, “Naked Lunch.” To commemorate the first appearance of “Naked Lunch” by the French publisher Maurice Girodias' Olympia Press in 1959 [first published, as our fellow Burroughsians will know, as “The Naked Lunch”], Grove Press published a 50th anniversary edition of the book in 2009. This beautiful hardcover edition in slipcase features the restored text edited by the paramount steward of all things WSB, James Grauerholz, with help from WSB bibliographer/biographer Barry Miles. Additionally, it contains a thoughtful afterword by Los Angeles Times book editor David Ulin. Both the book in illustrated boards without dust jacket as issued & slipcase reproduce the cover art of the original edition: automatic calligraphic-style drawings made by WSB and clearly influenced by his great friend & collaborator, Brion Gysin. Third Mind Books Founder & Senior Curator, Arthur S. Nusbaum, provided the image used for these reproductions to the publisher from his personal copy of the first Olympia Press edition of 1959. Book in Slipcase and sealed; as new. Very Fine; As New / Near Fine. [Item #4011]
