Cullowhee, NC: New Native Press, 1995. First Edition. Softcover. Signed by publisher Thomas Rain Crowe. "I have followed the work of Philip Daughtry (alias Suntree) for almost twenty years. During this time I have seen him, like a coyote or a chameleon, change his voice/colors from urban outlaw, to backcountry eco-activist, to Gaelic bard, to Hollywood screenwriter, to cowboy poet. In this collection...Philip James Daughtry stands up in the attire of immigrant incarnations as manifest in representational book manuscripts (published and unpublished) from over a 30-year history." (from Preface by Thomas Rain Crowe, pg. 9) A collection of over a quarter-century's worth of poems by Philip James Daughtry (a/k/a Philip Suntree), the great & greatly varied British-American poet who among many other things is a descendant of Frank & Jesse James, the quintessential Wild Western American outlaws. With an introduction by the acclaimed poet & publisher Thomas Rain Crowe, & a production of Crowe's imprint New Native Press. In our book, Starting From San Francisco (Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075), Crowe tells the story of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance, which he was at the center of alongside Daughtry (then known as Suntree) during the 1970s. In SFSF, Crowe relates fascinating anecdotes about Daughtry/Suntree in relation to the larger group-phenomenon. Daughtry & Crowe remain close friends & colleagues to this day, another quarter-century since this compilation as of this writing, & we have had the privilege of knowing & befriending them both- true originals. On the copyright page, Crowe has hand-written his signature just below & next to printed reference of himself & his imprint. Trade-format softcover original, first edition as stated on copyright page. Among the blurbs by most distinguished American poets on back cover is this by Gary Snyder, mentor to Crowe, Daughtry & many others during the BBG/SSFR era: "Philip Daughtry, Suntree, "kid from Darkness," a risk-taker, immigrant from England, deeply knowing America, raven of transatlantic magic, a poet of excellent ear, quick craft, sure language, writing both American west coast and Celtic miner "Geordie" dialect of his youth- deep sense of the sinister under the gab, playing both light and shadow. Philip lives his poems boldly and deftly. I commend them to you-" A desirable Daughtry collectible with highly significant association & provenance. In very fine condition with only slight rubbing & scratching to glossy front, back covers & spine; a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; previous seller's printed barcode-sticker near lower right corner of back cover obscuring slight amount of text (not any of the blurbs). Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #4018]
