The Judgment of Paris

New York, NY: E.P. Dutton & Company, Inc., 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. "The most versatile of the younger novelists who have helped shape American letters during the last decade, Gore Vidal has written in The Judgment of Paris, a major novel. He has retold in modern terms the ancient legend of Paris and the Golden Apple and the result is an extraordinary novel of a young American's year in post-war Italy, Egypt and France, of his adventures among the foreign cities, of his affairs with three temptresses, goddesses in modern terms, and finally of the decision he makes." (from front flap) The acclaimed, if then-controversial early novel by Gore Vidal (1925-2012), the prolific, patrician-mannered American writer & public intellectual. Beginning in the late 1940s, Vidal (along with James Baldwin, Truman Capote et al.) pioneered a bravely unapologetic depiction of gay & bisexual characters & episodes, as in this work. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition as stated on copyright page. With front cover & spine artwork by George Salter (1897-1967), the great German-American designer. On front flap, there is a very interesting logo of the venerable publisher noting its hundredth anniversary (1852-1952). A rare & desirable Vidal collectible from the height of mid-20th century book design. Book in very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to front, back covers & spine; light wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & esp. corners of same; light rubbing & browning to edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior very fine with only light browning at blank thin margins & edges of page leaves; tiny bumps at upper corners of a few of same. Dust jacket near-fine with mild rubbing, browning & creasing to front, back covers, spine & flaps; light wear, some small-to-tiny bumps & a few short, closed tears at edges & corners of same; slight loss of paper esp. at spine-edges & corners. Very Fine / Near Fine. [Item #4031]
