ISBN: 1883197201
Cullowhee, NC: New Native Press; Fern Hill Records, 2005; 2007. First Editions. Softcover; CD. Book signed by publisher Thomas Rain Crowe. "A hybrid combination of wise old sage and someone teetering on the edge describes Ted Pope in performance. On the page his work, likewise, combines ancient wisdom and that which is out of control. A walking contradiction, he is infused with a kind of charge rarely experienced, either onstage or on the page, in any time or space, in any culture or Age. In a word, his writing is imbued with an extra-terrestrial grounding that, for the reader, brings on vertigo while being in love with flight...From ancient Egypt to the netherworlds of the subconscious, Ted Pope's rEdlipsticK takes us on a journey of imagination bordering on legend." (from back cover) A collection of poems by Ted Pope, a young & dynamic North Carolina poet who is the direct progeny-protege of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance. Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed North Carolinian poet & publisher who was at the center of the BBG/ SSFR during the 1970s, mentions Pope as exemplary of the "grandbaby Beats" who have been inspired & mentored by the previous Beat Generations & are creating their own unique oeuvres (see our book, Starting From San Francisco, Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075, pg. 80). We offer two versions of this work, both published (or co-published) by Crowe's New Native Press imprint: (1) Book version, trade-format softcover original, first edition, first printing as stated on copyright page & as indicated by number sequence thereon. Next to & below printed reference to NNP & himself on copyright page, Crowe has hand-written his signature in bold blue ink. Among the Baby Beat luminaries who provide laudatory blurbs on back cover are Crowe & Ken Wainio (1952-2006), the great Surrealist & close friend of Crowe who we believe was a key influence on Pope. Wainio writes: "Ted Pope's work is sweaty with genius. Unexpected as ancient Egypt rising at our feet. rEdlipsticK should be read like hieroglyphics (secret pictures). Take the time. It's worth the ride." (2) Compact disc recording in illustrated sleeve with basically the same front cover graphics as the book. In this CD, Pope (who is a prominent performer on the American "SLAM" scene) reads the poems of rEdlipsticK. A co-production of Fern Hill Records & NNP. Two original versions of the first collection of poems by the promising Ted Pope, with important elder-poet-to-protege-poet association & provenance. (1) in very fine condition with only very slight, sparse rubbing to glossy front, back covers & spine; a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps, small creases at corners of a few page leaves. (2) very fine in transparent protective resealable sleeve; illustrated sleeve & CD appear to be substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #4060]
