Evergreen Review Vol. 1 No. 2 (1957)

New York, NY: Grove Press, Inc., 1957. First Printing. Softcover. This very early (second ever) & famous "San Francisco Scene" number of the legendary literary journal co-edited by Barney Rosset & published by his Grove Press features "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg, among the handful of primary, founding texts of the Beat Generation. Only a year after it was first published by the iconic City Lights Pocket Poets Series in "Howl and Other Poems," the main body of the poem is printed here without the "Footnote to Howl" section or the other poems that were included in that volume. With the landmark obscenity trial of the City Lights edition still in progress when this issue was released circa May of 1957 (Morgan, C51, pg. 230; Dowden, Section D, pg. 71), the judgment not handed down until October, we can see a self-censorious hedging by even the brave Rosset in this line: "who let themselves be......in the...by saintly motor-/ cyclists, and screamed with joy," (pg. 139). Also in this historic issue are contributions by Beat/ San Francisco Renaissance luminaries Robert Duncan, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Kerouac, Michael McClure, Gary Snyder, Jack Spicer & Philip Whalen; as well as proto-Beat-&-Beyond mentors Henry Miller & Kenneth Rexroth; & others in the San Francisco literary milieu at its zenith. Also with a glossy section of photographs by Harry Redl of Duncan, Ferlinghetti, Ginsberg, McClure & others. Softcover in sewn binding. A classic Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance rarity that belongs in all Third Minds' collections. In relatively near-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, scratching, browning, creasing & spotting to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, chips & creases at thin edges & corners of same; mild rubbing & occasional spotting to edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior very fine with only very light browning to blank margins of page leaves; tiny bumps at corners of a few of same. Near Fine. [Item #4063]
