Kirkaldy, Fife, Scotland: Akros Publications, 1997. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Inscribed & signed by Maureen MacNaughtan to Thomas Rain Crowe. "This red-hot auld enemy match/ Has earned a painted warcry,/ A loud flock of Bravehearts/ Rampage the crowded marketplace/ Adding colour to bigotry's stall./ The emotion beneath the flag/ Carries the getto blasting lantern/ Of bare knuckled xenophobia./ It twists round parked cars/ Leaving the exposed to choose." (Burning Schism," first stanza, pg. 15) A collection of poems by Maureen MacNaughtan, an acclaimed Scottish poet. Many of the poems are spelled & written to varying degrees in phonetic Scottish dialect but in English, as demonstrated slightly in the (rather prescient) poem quoted above. An ascetically handsome chapbook production in stapled printed red wrappers with blank blue under-wrappers, issued as No. 6 in publisher's Pamphlet Poets Series, first edition of unknown limitation. On the inner front under-wrap, MacNaughtan has hand-dated in the year of publication, written & signed: "3rd October 97/ To Thomas/ with love/ (signed) Maureen." "Thomas" is Thomas Rain Crowe, the noted poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting From San Francisco, Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). Crowe's interests & areas of expertise include the literatures, languages & cultures of Ireland, Scotland & Wales. A rare & desirable MacNaughtan collectible with important poet-to-poet association & provenance. In very fine condition with only slight rubbing, faint creasing & fading to front, back covers & stapled spine of over-wraps; a bit of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same & blue under-wraps; staples in process of rusting with very slight interior bleeding. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at upper corners of page leaves; very slight rust-bleeding at middle staple-hooks noted above. Very Fine. [Item #4073]
