New York, NY: McGraw-Hill Book Company; Grove Press, Inc., 1974; 1977. First Editions. Journals Early Fifties- Early Sixties signed & dated by Allen Ginsberg. A bundled offer of two very important rarities (one of them particularly exceptional) by Allen Ginsberg, Founding Father of the Beat Generation & beyond: (1) Allen Ginsberg Journals Early Fifties- Early Sixties, edited by Gordon Ball. A now-classic, indispensable collection of Ginsberg's original journal entries of his travels, relationships (famous & otherwise) & experiences throughout this critical period of his life & work. With many candid photographs of Ginsberg & Co. that compliment the entries, & facsimile pages of his drawings from the journals. The entries are preceded by Ball's lengthy & informative "Reader's Guide." A production of Barney Rosset's venerable Grove Press, hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, First Edition, First Printing of 1977 as stated on copyright page (Morgan, A35a1.1, pgs. 47-48). On the title page, Ginsberg has hand-written his signature (a very fine specimen, & we've seen many) below his printed name, & below that the date "2/6/92" & his characteristic encircled "AH," all in bold black ink. A superb Ginsberg collectible in exceptionally very fine condition: Book with only a bit of wear at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; slight rubbing to upper edge of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves; small notation in pencil (previous owner's name?) & date "11/30/77" on blank rear endpaper, removable but we have retained it for its being contemporaneous with publication. Dust jacket very fine with only very light rubbing & browning to front, back covers, spine & flaps; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; one tiny chip-closed tear with loss of surface paper near upper right spine-corner. (2) Allen Verbatim: Lectures on Poetry, Politics, Consciousness; also edited by Ball. As written on front flap, "This book came into being during the spring of 1971 in a series of "Cross-country Exchanges, Talks, Lectures, Rhapsodies" by Allen Ginsberg with "Fellow Poets, Students, Scholars, Sadhus." In most of them Ginsberg speaks directly to those in school- students and teachers...part of the vast constituency of the young who see in him the embodiment of the escape from "the prison of conditioning." His wisdom is vast, his anger is tempered by humor, his serenity is remarkable." Another now-classic compendium essential to the understanding of Ginsberg's profundity. The lecture transcriptions are preceded by Ball's introduction; followed by facsimile of Ginsberg's musical notations set to William Blake's poetry, & an appendix. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition of 1974 with all points in Morgan, A31a1., pgs. 41-42. We are all but "throwing in" this volume, equally important in substance as & complimentary to (1), due to its altogether so-so condition as follows: Book in fine condition with mild rubbing to front, back covers & spine; mild-to-moderate wear to edges & corners of same; light rubbing & spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only one moderate-sized crease at upper right area & corner of one page leaf (pg. xv). Dust jacket fair-to-good with mild rubbing, scratching & browning to front, back covers & flaps; moderate-to-extensive wear & several areas with significant loss of paper esp. at lower left spine-edge & corner, upper spine-edge & upper front cover edge. Original price near upper right corner of front flap canceled with pencil-slash. An extra handling fee will be added for shipping due to the weight of this item. Very Fine; Fine / Very Fine; Fair-Good. [Item #4081]
