Beat Scene No. 41 (2002)
Coventry, England: The Beat Scene Press, 2002. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This vintage 2002 number of the magazine-format literary journal edited & published by Kevin Ring in the UK features an extensive article on pioneering artist & Beat publisher Wallace Berman by Ring, including photographs of Berman & his works (some in color), along with an interview of Berman's son Tosh conducted by Ring circa 2001. Also an excerpt from a critical biography of Charles Bukowski & his relation to the Beats by Jean Francois Duval; a tribute to Gregory Corso, who had recently died, by Zoe Artemis; an excerpt from Waiting Period, the then-latest novel by Hubert Selby Jr.; a lengthy article by Trevor Carolan on primary Beat poet Gary Snyder based on an interview, with many Snyder quotes in italics; a tribute retrospective on poet-monk Philip Whalen, who had also recently died, along with an interview with Whalen conducted by Robert Winston in 1994; a tribute to John Wieners, yet another great poet who had recently died, by Kevin Killian; & more. With many reviews & full of photo-illustrations of rare & delightful images throughout. A personal favorite of Ring, this collectible issue, as ever, more than lives up to its emphatic motto on front cover: "This Really is the Beat Generation." In very fine condition with only a bit of rubbing, scratching & short, faint creasing to front, back covers & stapled spine; very slight wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps to mostly lower corners of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #4093]
