Evergreen Review Vol. 7 No. 31 (October-November 1963)

New York, NY: Evergreen Review, Inc., 1963. First Printing. Softcover. This vintage number of the legendary literary journal chiefly edited by Barney Rosset features an excerpt of four chapters from the then-work-in-progress Trout Fishing in America by Richard Brautigan, which would later be published in full during 1967 & become a cult classic. Also in this issue is the poem "The Lean Rats on the March" by Anselm Hollo; transcript of a very interesting letter by Jack Kerouac to a court in Italy defending his novel The Subterraneans (then banned there); a short story-memoir, "Return to the Mountains," by the poet W.S. Merwin; the poem "I Heard Yevtushenko," a tour-de-force by Harold Norse (among our favorite Beat-&-Beyond Burroughs-inspired writers); an excerpt from The Story of O, the infamous kinky fantasy that is a precursor to Fifty Shades of Grey et al. by the mysterious Pauline Reage, translated & with a preface by Sabine Destre; & much more. With notes on contributors & contemporary ads including a promotion for Saint Genet, "Jean-Paul Sartre's amazing book on Jean Genet, criminal and genius, his life and his legend," another for Genet's own Our Lady of the Flowers, etc. Trade-format softcover, complete with attached sheet of subscription cards. Another rich & varied issue in this most collectible series. In relatively fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, browning & scratching to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; mild rubbing, browning & occasional spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps & small creases at upper corners of some page leaves. Fine. [Item #4099]
