New York, NY: Simon and Schuster, 1989. First Edition. Hardcover. "...a long-awaited publishing event- the definitive biography of one of this century's most flamboyant and influential literary renegades. Drawing upon Allen Ginsberg's extensive journals and correspondence, as well as scores of interviews with friends, associates, and with Ginsberg himself, Barry Miles has painted an intimate and richly detailed portrait of the man whose poetry shocked the literary establishment, and whose rebellious lifestyle fueled the countercultural revolution of the 1960s." (from front flap) The acclaimed biography of the Founding Father of the Beat Generation by Miles, a great literary figure in his own right who knew him well & worked with him extensively over many years. Written & published within its subject's later lifetime, this work has stood the test of time & remains a key resource on the life & times of Ginsberg & his legendary associates- William S. Burroughs, Neal Cassady, Jack Kerouac, Peter Orlovsky et al. With two sections of photographs. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page. Included is a loose index card with notes on both sides by previous owner-seller which appear to be comments & questions that the writer intended to relate to & ask Ginsberg at a reading/ promotional appearance which possibly took place at the venerable, now-gone Gotham Book Mart in NYC at the time of publication. An essential Ginsberg biography for the collector & scholar, in its increasingly rare original form & with interesting ephemera. Book in very fine condition with only the slightest wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; very light rubbing & scratching to edges of text block. Interior very fine, substantially mint. Dust jacket fine with only very slight rubbing, scratching & faint creasing to front, back covers, spine & flaps; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same. We would deem it very fine if not for the (un-removable without damage) remains of a previous seller's price-barcode sticker which slightly obscures reproduction of historic 1961 photograph of Ginsberg & Co. in Tangier (specifically the face & upper body of Ian Sommerville, upper left arm & shoulder of Gregory Corso; a variation of the same image unobscured is in the first photo section). Ephemera very fine with only tiny bump at upper right (recto) corner. Very Fine / Fine. [Item #4111]
