Fresno, CA: The Giligia Press, 1970. Limited First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. "John Montgomery came from the same origins as (Richard) Brautigan, was weaned by (Kenneth) Rexroth, and on the third day rose from among the blackberry tangle of Allen Ginsberg's Berkeley cottage plot from whence along parallel tensors of the San Francisco scene he intersected Kerouac novels, delivered a telephone book to Union Square's buried phone box, spent fourteen years in college, saw frost on the pumpkin at Bread Loaf, Vermont, looked under rocks in Venice West, California, jail in Colorado, smuggled a sleeping bag from Montreal, climbed Citlaltepetl, 18000 feet high in Mexico, filed his own divorce answer, sold vitamins, made skis for a living." (from back cover) A chapbook of two short memoir-essays on Jack Kerouac by John Montgomery (1919-1992), a writer who knew Kerouac & indeed "intersected" several Kerouac novels, as the relatively minor characters of "Henry Morley" & "Alex Fairbrother" in The Dharma Bums & Desolation Angels, respectively. The full title of this work is "A Memoir In Which Is Revealed Secret Lives & West Coast Whispers, Being The Confessions Of Henry Morley, Alex Fairbrother & JOHN MONTGOMERY, Triune Madman of The Dharma Bums, Desolation Angels & Other Trips." A handsome production published only the year following Kerouac's death in an edition of 2000, of which 200 copies were clothbound hardcovers per colophon. This copy is one of the 1800 (un-numbered) chapbooks (Charters, B45, pg. 71). Montgomery would go on to edit, compile & contribute to several Kerouac-memoir anthologies (see our items 1195, 4075 & 4106), this is his first foray into Kerouac biographical scholarship. A very rare Kerouac-related collectible, among the first eyewitness accounts to appear after his untimely passing. In very fine condition with only very slight rubbing, fading & browning to front, back covers & stapled spine; a few tiny bumps & short, faint creases at thin edges & corners of same; light browning to edges of text block; staples in process of rusting with just a bit of middle-interior bleeding. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves; miniscule rusting noted above. Very Fine. [Item #4114]
