Cullowhee, NC: New Native Press, 2014. First Edition. Softcover. Signed by Thomas Rain Crowe. "From the early 1970s through the early 1980s, for about a decade, San Francisco was often compared to Paris and the urban centers in Russia in the early years of the twentieth century. Centered around City Lights Bookstore in North Beach, a fleur-de-lis had sprouted and bloomed, whose petals would eventually spread into the ethnic neighborhoods in San Francisco and out over the whole Bay Area, with leafy creative vines reaching other literary and artistic circles further afield...Young poets, artists and musicians coming from all over the country, and in fact the world, were arriving almost daily to add their voices to the chorus of a growing community of Beat-inspired bohemian brethren." (from back cover) Subtitled "a photo panegyric to the poets, pally and place," this collection of images with captions & commentary chronicles the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance which reached its zenith during the mid-to-late 1970s. Edited & with an introduction & many appearances by Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed poet & publisher who was at the center of the phenomenon from its birth through its heyday (see our book, Starting From San Francisco, Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075- a perfect complement to this volume-*so much so that we include a complimentary copy of the trade edition with this purchase*). A multitude of photographs show the Baby Beats including Neeli Cherkovski, Crowe, Philip Daughtry (then Suntree), Kaye McDonough, David Moe, Ken Wainio & many others in interaction with their mentor-colleagues from the original Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance a generation earlier including Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Hirschman, Bob Kaufman, Gary Snyder & again many others. Also with reproductions of myriad ephemera. As noted by Crowe in the title, his introduction & back cover copy, as well as demonstrated in many of the images, the key spark which set this fertile decade in motion was the revival of Beatitude magazine, first founded by Kaufman during the original Beat era. A beautiful production of Crowe's own New Native Press imprint, oblong-format softcover original, first edition, first printing as stated on copyright page & as indicated by number sequence thereon. On the title page, just below an exemplary image of himself with his cohorts from both Beat Generations, Crowe has hand-written his signature in bold blue ink. An increasingly rare, collectible & most important literary & cultural testament. In very fine condition, virtually mint inside & out. Very Fine. [Item #4120]
