Cullowhee, NC: New Native Press, 2014. First Edition. Softcover. Signed by publisher Thomas Rain Crowe. "I was the patron saint/ of the Sorcerer's Apprentice./ When he conjured me,/ I dropped from my head/ twelve stars that took the shape/ of a Celtic cross in the southern sky./ A Cerulean blue scarf flew out my sleeve./ He wrapped it around his waist/ and ended up on the Bering Straits." ("The Queen of Emeralds," first stanza, pg. 97) A collection of poems spanning the career of Kaye McDonough, the celebrated American poet, playwright & printer who was a major member of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s. With an enthusiastic introduction by Jack Hirschman, the firebrand former poet laureate of San Francisco who was a friend of, mentor to & collaborator with McDonough & the other poets in the group including Thomas Rain Crowe. A production of Crowe's New Native Press imprint, trade-format softcover original, first edition, first printing as stated on copyright page & as indicated by number sequence thereon. In our book, Starting From San Francisco (Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075), Crowe discusses & relates anecdotes about Hirschman & McDonough among many others. He writes about this volume: "(McDonough's) collection of selected poems that was being held by City Lights Books was never released...many years later I published her selected poems (Pagan) with my New Native Press- to much acclaim and personal satisfaction to its author I might add. Her work, not unlike Bob Kaufman's, was original, unique. No small thing then or any time." (pg. 137) On the copyright page, below, next to & slightly overlapping with reference to himself & NNP, Crowe has hand-written his signature in bold blue ink. An excellent, collectible introduction to the evocative & enchanting poetry of Kaye McDonough, with most significant association & provenance. In very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; very small crease at lower left corner of back cover; larger but very faint surface crease near same; former seller's (or publisher's?) barcode sticker affixed near lower right edge/ corner of back cover. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #4135]
