Beat Scene No. 66 (Autumn 2011)
Coventry, England: The Beat Scene Press, 2011. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This 2011 number of the magazine-format literary journal edited & published by Kevin Ring in the UK includes three wonderful features concerning William S. Burroughs: A profile of WSB by poet Bill Butler first published in London's Guardian newspaper issue of November 27, 1965; a very useful & concise timeline of his life & work mostly credited to the late, great WSB bibliographer Eric Shoaf (a key resource in our own WSB curations); & the essay "My Burroughs" by Jed Birmingham, the towering scholar-collector whose Reality Studio site is a frequent must-visit for all serious Burroughsians. Also in this issue are four articles concerning Gregory Corso including a lengthy interview conducted by Robert King on march 22, 1974 & Ring's haunting essay "Hope Savage: Mystery Girl" about Corso's relationship with the enigmatic Beat-era woman (also reprinted separately in a limited edition Beat Scene chapbook); an essay by our good friend & colleague Gregory Stephenson on Jack Kerouac's fondness for & affinity with Harpo Marx; letters between poet Michael McClure & filmmaker Stan Brakhage written during the 1960s-1970s & edited by Christopher Luna; & much more. With an as-ever rich review section including of Gordon Ball's Allen Ginsberg Memoir East Hill Farm by the great Ann Charters; vintage images throughout including a 1950s NYC photo-booth portrait of Corso on front cover. Another deep, varied issue in this indispensable & most collectible series that always upholds its front cover motto: "This is the Beat Generation." In very fine condition with only slight rubbing & a few short, faint creases to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; staples in process of rusting with minimal interior bleeding. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of a few page leaves; bit of rust-bleeding at middle noted above. Very Fine. [Item #4138]
