Cullowhee, NC: New Native Press, 2015. First Edition. Softcover. Signed by editor & contributor Thomas Rain Crowe. "Inside these pages there are one hundred years of unique American poets who are editors, publishers, activists, environmentalists, spiritual leaders, and humanitarians engaged in their communities in efforts not only to better themselves but to work hands-on for the betterment of humanity and the planet. Their bodies of work are evidence of these labors, these loves...A group of 35 poets-- from Hawaii to Vermont-- who represent the contemporary American literary landscape. Three generations that make up a "centenary" and a century's legacy." (from back cover) A sweeping anthology of American poets, edited, with preface & contributions by Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting From San Francisco, Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). The Baby Beats & their original Beat mentors are well-represented here, including Neeli Cherkovski, Crowe himself, Philip Daughtry, Anne Valley Fox, Kaye McDonough, David Moe, Barbara Szerlip & others among the former; & Diane di Prima, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Hirschman, David Meltzer, Gary Snyder & others among the latter. Also represented are many great & influential American poets from neither Beat Generation per se including John Ashbery, Wendell Berry, Robert Bly, W. S. Merwin, Joe Napora, Margaret Randall, Jerome Rothenberg & more. Each poet is given a short, insightful biographical-critical introduction by Crowe. At the time this volume was published in 2015 (Crowe slightly jumped the gun on this "centenary"), every poet within it was still among us. Now sadly as of this writing & counting, Ashbery, Di Prima, Ferlinghetti & more have inevitably passed on- but their immortal works remain to inspire current & future generations, here & in hundreds of their own collections (many of which can be found here). Trade-format softcover original, a production of Crowe's own New Native Press imprint, first edition, first printing as stated on copyright page & as indicated by number sequence thereon. At the conclusion of his preface, below his printed name & date, Crowe has hand-written his signature in bold blue ink. An excellent & collectible Beat-&-Beyond anthology of American poetry with most significant association & provenance. In very fine condition with only a bit of rubbing to front, back covers & spine; a few tiny bumps & some small creases at thin edges & corners of same; previous seller's small barcode sticker affixed to blank lower area of back cover. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps & very small, faint creases to mostly lower corners of page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #4178]
