Origin Fourth Series No. 4 (July 1978)

Kyoto, Japan: Origin Press, 1978. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "No spirit of community is found amongst men who only work/ in common without communion to impose on a world which/ refuses the changing of it which they desire." (first paragraph, inner front cover preamble) The fourth number in the fourth series of the legendary literary journal edited, published & with contribution by the great expatriate American poet & translator Cid Corman (1924-2004). Subtitled "Community of individuals," this issue begins with an essay followed by 29 poems by the esteemed Australian-born poet Clive Faust, altogether comprising about three-quarters of its contents. Other venerable contributors of single or several poems are Corman himself ("Satori," a somewhat scatological Haiku that concludes the issue); poet, publisher & New Zealand native Alan Loney; the acclaimed sui generis American poet John Perlman; & the Corman-protege autodidact Frank Samperi (1933-1991). A chapbook-format production in stapled wrappers, officially published in Japan where Corman lived most of his life, & printed in India. From the library of Clayton Eshleman (1935-2021), another great American poet & translator who obtained many of his Origin issues from Corman personally & was a contributor to several of them. Eshleman was our friend & mentor here in Michigan, & we grieve his very recent loss. A vintage issue of this eminently collectible series, in very fine condition with very slight fading/browning mostly at blank margins & edges of front, back covers & stapled spine; a few tiny bumps & short, faint creases at/near thin edges & corners of same; very light rubbing & browning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps & short, faint creases to corners of page leaves, esp. upper corners. Very Fine. [Item #4181]
