City Lights Books: A Descriptive Bibliography

ISBN: 0810826216
Metuchen, NJ: Scarecrow Press, 1992. Limited Lettered First Edition. Hardcover. This is the limited, lettered, signed edition of the City Lights Books bibliography compiled by Ralph Cook with introduction from the late literary lion, Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021). It contains the entire published output of City Lights Books from its inaugural publication—Ferlinghetti’s debut book, “Pictures of the Gone World,”—through 1990. Cook is a first-rate bibliographer and this work does not disappoint—it is cleanly and cogently assembled, and can guide one towards an understanding of what makes each of the editions cataloged here special. Issued in hardcover only, this is one of the 26 lettered copies signed at colophon by both Ferlinghetti and Cook. It is Copy “P.” Additionally, it has been inscribed by Cook to Jeffrey Weinberg of Water Row Books. Inscription reads: “For Jeffrey / In gratitude for your assistance / in the preparation of this book / Ralph Cook.” Accompanying this is a small piece of ephemera: an additional note from Cook to Weinberg which reads: "Jeff -- / here is a copy of the limited edition of the book, / as an apology for not including your name in the / acknowledgements. / Brautigan/di Prima biblios are / virtually finished. Time to / start looking for a publisher! / Thanks for everything -- / Ralph." An extremely rare collectible with rich provenance, and an indispensable reference to one of the most legendary & significant Beat publishers. In very fine condition with only slight gilt-stamp wear & a tiny gouge on front cover cloth. Very Fine. [Item #4182]
